Privacy Policy for WiFi Watchglass
Last Updated: June 3rd 2026
WiFi Watchglass is developed by Anthony Preston, currently transitioning to Matterdyne [In Formation] ("we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle data within the application. Our primary architectural goal is to ensure that your network security data remains under your exclusive control on your device.
1. Data Collection and Usage
WiFi Watchglass is a local network security auditor. To perform its function, it processes the following data:
Location Data (Background & Foreground): To access Wi-Fi hardware scanning APIs and signal-strength (RSSI) data, the Android operating system requires the app to have Location permissions. This data is used to establish "security baselines" for your networks. Specifically, the app uses your location to detect "Network Relocation"—an indicator of a portable Rogue Access Point (Evil Twin) moving with an attacker.
Network Identifiers: The app processes SSIDs (network names), BSSIDs (hardware MAC addresses), IP addresses, and signal strength levels. This is used to detect infrastructure impersonation and Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, and to inform the user.
DNS Query Metadata: The app audits your DNS settings by comparing local responses against trusted global providers.
2. Local-First Processing and Storage
On-Device Storage: All network profiles, security baselines, and forensic logs are stored strictly on your device. No environmental data is uploaded to our servers.
Encryption: All stored data is secured in an AES-256 encrypted database (SQLCipher) using a hardware-backed key managed by the Android Keystore.
No Central Accounts: The application does not require or support account creation. We do not know who you are, and we do not have a way to link your network data to your identity.
3. Third-Party Data Transmission
WiFi Watchglass only communicates with the following external services for specific security auditing tasks:
Encrypted DNS Probes: The app performs DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) lookups to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google (8.8.8.8), and Quad9 (9.9.9.9) to verify the integrity of your local resolver.
Hardware Attribution API: If enabled in settings, the app sends the first 3 bytes (the OUI prefix) of a MAC address to api.macvendors.com to identify hardware manufacturers. The full MAC address is never transmitted.
No Analytics/Telemetry: The app contains no third-party tracking, advertising, or telemetry SDKs (such as Firebase or Google Analytics).
4. Data Retention and Deletion
User Control: You have full control over your data. You can purge all logs and network baselines at any time using the "Wipe All Data" button within the application settings.
Auto-Deletion: The app includes a user-configurable retention policy to automatically prune old security events.
5. Children’s Privacy
Our services do not address anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children. Since all data is stored locally and anonymously, we have no means of identifying the age of the user.
6. Changes to This Privacy Policy & Business Transitions
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our software, operational models, or legal obligations. You are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
Business Transfers: In the event that the developer undergoes a business transition—such as incorporation, a merger, acquisition by another company, or a sale of assets—the application and its operational framework may be transferred as part of that transition. Any successor entity will inherit the commitments made in this privacy policy regarding your historical data.
If a successor entity introduces changes to the application's data architecture or business model that require central data collection or transmission off-device, such changes will only apply prospectively. Users will be given prominent in-app notice and the opportunity to review the updated terms before any tracking or data collection mechanisms are activated.
